FARMINGTON — The University of Maine-Farmington softball team picked up three North Atlantic Conference wins over the weekend.
On Saturday, UMF piled up 18 hits in the nightcap to win 14-3 and salvage a doubleheader split against the Johnson State Badgers, who won the first game 4-3.
On Sunday, UMF swept Lyndon State 15-7 and 9-1.
Kylie Cunningham (double, 2 RBIs), Alison Hamilton and Ashley Gleason accounted for three hits apiece for the University of Maine-Farmington. Meryl Bond and Kiana Thompson each singled twice with two RBIs and Haley Felkel added two singles behind winning pitcher Emily Vitone, who scattered six hits.
Shannon Grier (RBI) and Hannah Leroux led Johnson State (6-14, 4-4 NAC) with a double and a single each.
In the opener, Kaitlynn Woodward stroked an RBI double and Victoria Kinney hit a run-scoring single in the seventh inning to rally the Badgers to victory.
Woodward added a single and an RBI while winning pitcher Andrea Williams (six hits, nine strikeouts) and Kasie Craig each hit two singles.
Margaret Fogarty poked a three-run double and Ashley Gleason singled twice for UMF behind losing pitcher Kailyn Hill.
On Sunday, Meryl Bond went 4-for-5, including a two-run homer and two-run single, to lead UMF by Lyndon State in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday 15-7.
UMF (6-17, 3-5 NAC) won the second game 9-1.
Gleason and Cunningham each chipped in with three hits and two RBIs in the second game for UMF. Fogarty and Thompson each added two hits and two RBIs.
Ashlynn Royce paced Lyndon (2-24, 0-10) with two hits and two RBIs.
In the second game, Hill (3-8) scattered six hits and a run over five innings to earn the win for UMF. She struck out five and walked one.
Bond went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Hamilton added a double, single and two RBIs.
Shelby Sheridan had two hits for Lyndon.
Baseball
UM-Farmington sweeps NEC
At Henniker, New Hampshire, Nate Pushard pitched a six-hitter in Saturday’s North Atlantic Conference opener as the Beavers won 7-2 on the way to a sweep.
The University of Maine-Farmington took the second game 8-6.
In Game 1, UMF scored four times in the first inning. Tom Grady (double) contributed three hits and an RBI with Jimmy Neal (double) and Grayson Beressi (RBI) posting two each.
Conor Crouse doubled and singled for NEC and Lonnie Cohen hit a two-run homer.
In Game 2, Neal’s three-run home run keyed a four-run sixth that gave the Beavers the win. Sean Cabaniss posted three singles, while Ben Keene (RBI) and Mark Leahy (double) had two each to back starter and winner Jory Humphrey.
Shawn Queen (double) and Vincent Backert each drove in two runs for the Pilgrims.
On Sunday, UMF received solid pitching performances from Kyle Peterson and Riley Chickering to earn another sweep over NEC 13-3 and 8-3.
Peterson (4-2) scattered six hits and two runs over six innings for UMF (17-12, 10-8 NAC). He walked four and struck out two.
Jordan Croteau, Dustin McCrossin and Tyler Flayhan each drove in two runs for UMF while Cabaniss chipped in with three singles. Neal added a double and single while Keene and Beressi each had two hits and an RBI.
Michael Young had two and drove in two runs for NEC (6-20, 5-13).
In Sunday’s second game, Chickering (4-3) allowed six hits and three runs while walking just one and striking out eight.
Cabaniss cranked a three-run homer and Beressi added a double and single. McCrossin drove in two runs.
Crouse singled twice for NEC.
Men’s Lacrosse
Husson 20, GMC 11
At Poultney, Vermont, Brandon Corbo tallied five goals and five assists to propel the Eagles to a North Atlantic Conference victory on Saturday.
Brandon Bosse (assist) and Brett Martin scored four goals each for Husson of Bangor (5-8, 5-2 NAC), and Vinny Visconti provided three goals and two assists. Brooks Gay (2 assists), Jack White, Chad Merrill and Tom Hart chipped in with a goal apiece.
Matt Martin and Nick Zavorotny each made two saves.
For Green Mountain College (2-10, 2-5 NAC), Will Durant led the way with four goals and an assist. Nate Laymon (2 assists), David Gerken and Chris Surdam netted two goals each and Carl Diethelm came up with nine saves.
NEC 18, MMA 1
At Castine on Saturday, Amani Mwingira scored four goals while Liam Chenail and Jarred Sausville posted three goals and an assist each as the Pilgrims earned a North Atlantic Conference win over the Mariners.
Skyler Saunders chipped in with two goals and five assists for New England College (11-6, 8-0 NAC). William Platt and Daniel Tibbrine teamed up to make seven saves.
Chase Whittemore scored the goal for Maine Maritime Academy (4-9, 4-3 NAC). Cody Schell turned in 17 saves.
Lyndon 26, UMF 8
At Farmington on Saturday, Kevin McCarthy registered seven goals and three assists and Shea Jones provided five goals and five assists in the Hornets’ NAC win over the Beavers.
Ian Pelkey (2 assists), Spencer Aubin (assist) and Zachary Carey came up with three goals each for Lyndon State (6-7, 5-3 NAC).
Cameron McAllister led the University of Maine-Farmington (0-10, 0-7 NAC) with four goals and an assist, Travis St. Pierre scored three times and Casey Wrigley added a goal. Caleb Carr made five saves.
Women’s Lacrosse
Husson 16, GMC 11
At Poultney, Vermont, Cassidy Roderick and Mattie Russell spearheaded a balanced attack with four goals each on Saturday as Husson of Bangor claimed a North Atlantic Conference win.
Alissa Fallon (2 assists) and Amanda Deshaies (assist) posted two goals each for the winners (5-6, 4-3 NAC) and Samara Oliver scored two more. Kaitlin Dolloff registered 10 saves.
Catie Brewster scored a game-high seven goals for Green Mountain College (5-7, 4-3 NAC). Megan Scully (2 assists) and Maegan Laymon each put in two goals and Chelsea Wimble made 12 saves.
Colby-Sawyer 14, UMF 7
At Farmington on Saturday, Nicole Lavigne scored three times in the Chargers’ NAC win over the Beavers.
Molly Mulcahy (assist), Carlie Chiodo (assist), Caitlyn Whearty (assist), Sara Berry and Bailey Starr scored two goals apiece for Colby-Sawyer (11-6, 7-1 NAC). Meghan Castellano made nine stops.
Alaina Shorey and Rhi Jackson provided two goals each to lead the University of Maine-Farmington (4-7, 2-5 NAC). Carly Raymond (assist), Rebecca Young and Mara Balboni chipped in with a goal each. Danielle Conway made seven saves and Alyssa Arsenault had two.
NEC 20, MMA 1
At Castine on Saturday, five-goal performances by Allison Granata (assist) and Tara Bainbridge spearheaded the Pilgrims to a North Atlantic Conference win over the Mariners.
Gabriella Bigos had three goals and an assist, with Alana Scott (2 assists) and Elizabeth Bois netting two goals each for New England College (10-7, 6-2 NAC). Mackenzie Meegan and Emma Harvey combined for two saves.
Sierra James scored the goal for Maine Maritime Academy (0-14, 0-7 NAC). Christina Wilson made nine saves.
