UM baseball to host ice cream truck
The UMaine baseball program is hosting the Darling’s Ice Cream for a Cause truck during Tuesday’s nonconference doubleheader against Rhode Island at Mahaney Diamond in Orono.
The twinbill starts at 2 p.m.
The Darling’s ice cream truck visits local events and offers free ice cream in exchange for voluntary donations to raise money for causes. UMaine is working with the Vs. Cancer Foundation, whose mission is to cure children’s cancer.
The proceeds from the effort, which will include the visit from the ice cream truck and collections at next weekend’s home series against UMass Lowell, will be split between Eastern Maine Medical Center and the Vs. Cancer Foundation.
UMaine baseball, which has been visiting young patients at EMMC over the last two years, has set a fundraising goal of $7,000.
Donations to the effort can be made at the Darling’s ice cream truck, a the weekend games, or on the web at http://team.vs-cancer-org/MaineBaseball.
Dallas grand jury to indict Manziel
DALLAS — A Dallas County grand jury is expected to indict former NFL quarterback Johnny Manziel on Tuesday on a charge of misdemeanor assault with bodily injury after he allegedly struck his ex-girlfriend, Manziel’s lawyer said.
Manziel, 23, is to be indicted on a Class A misdemeanor domestic violence assault charge, a lawyer for Manziel, Robert Hinton, said.
“He will plead not guilty,” Hinton said.
The charge against the former Heisman Trophy winner stems from a January incident in which Manziel is accused of hitting, kidnapping and threatening to kill Colleen Crowley, 23. Crowley accused Manziel of hitting her so hard that she temporarily lost her hearing, court papers show.
Crowley told police she was assaulted at a Dallas hotel and then again while driving to her home in Fort Worth, according to a police report.
The case was referred to the grand jury, which hears evidence behind closed doors.
Manziel, known as “Johnny Football,” was a standout at Texas A&M University before playing two seasons with the Cleveland Browns and then being dropped in March.
