CHINA, Maine — A local Hannaford supermarket was robbed by a lone male suspect Monday evening, according to Kennebec County Sheriff Ryan Reardon.

The robbery was reported shortly before 8 p.m., according to Reardon.

A responding deputy was less than a minute from the store at the time of the call, but the suspect was gone by the time police arrived, the sheriff said.

The suspect presented a note demanding opiate-based medication and was given some before fleeing, Reardon said. No weapon was displayed, and the robber fled in a vehicle.

The robber is a white male believed to be in his 20s. Reardon said he has a slim build and was wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, a baseball cap, sunglasses, blue latex gloves and light colored sneakers. The sweatshirt has a white colored logo on the left front breast.

A state police dog assisted Kennebec County deputies in searching for evidence at the scene.

“It is important for all pharmacies to stay vigilant,” Reardon said. “As law enforcement continues to address the heroin problem and more dealers go to jail, other means will be sought by addicts to fill the void.”

Detective Michael Bickford is handling the case. Anyone with information about the incident is urged to call the sheriff’s office at 623-3591 and ask for him.
