PORTLAND, Maine — A Windham man accused of killing his wife earlier this year pleaded not guilty Tuesday at the Cumberland County Courthouse to one count each of murder and manslaughter, according to the Maine attorney general’s office.

Noah Gaston, 33, told police he shot and killed his wife, Alicia Gaston, 34, in the home they shared with their three children early on the morning of Jan. 14, according to the affidavit. He told detectives he believed her to be an intruder.

Noah Gaston allegedly shot her as she was coming up the stairs in the two-story, two-bedroom house.

Superior Court Justice Michaela Murphy accepted Gaston’s pleas Tuesday and ordered that he continue to be held without bail at the Cumberland County Jail. The judge ruled in February that there was probable cause to charge Gaston with murder.

Court documents filed in the case said that Gaston was not working when his wife died and the couple had financial problems.

He was indicted last month by the Cumberland County grand jury on one count each of intentional or knowing murder, or, as an alternative, manslaughter.

His trial has been tentatively set for March 2017.

If convicted of murder, Gaston faces between 25 years and life in prison. He faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of manslaughter.
