OLD TOWN, Maine — A turtle, ferret, Betta fish and several rats, mice and reptiles were turned over to the Old Town Animal Orphanage on Thursday after police responded to a call at a local woman’s home on Wednesday and found them.
“The woman, she definitely took good care of them,” Shannon Pond, a staffer at the animal shelter, said Thursday afternoon after about 30 of the surrendered animals had arrived with more expected to come in. “For the most part, everybody is healthy.”
The woman was just not able to handle caring for so many animals, Pond said, referring all questions about the woman to the Old Town Police Department. A message left with the department Thursday afternoon was not immediately returned.
“They’re not up for adoption, yet,” Pond said. “We’re still taking in animals.”
Animals that are surrendered typically are kept for a short period of time for processing before they are put up for adoption, she said.
Old Town Animal Orphanage, which had a handful of cats up for adoption, is located on the Airport Road.
