PORTLAND, Maine — The Binghamton Mets used an offensive onslaught and defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 8-1 in the finale of a five-game Eastern League baseball series Sunday at Hadlock Field.
Portland still won the series 3-2.
Binghamton scored four times in the first inning off of Ty Buttrey (L, 0-6), who allowed seven hits and walked two in his lone inning of the outing. Dominic Smith, Xorge Carrillo, Phillip Evans, and Maikis De La Cruz each had an RBI single in the frame.
Binghamton added another run in the fifth, then three more in the sixth — including a solo home run by Maikis De La Cruz off of Williams Jerez. The Mets racked up 17 hits — including three for Matt Oberste and two each for Carrillo, De La Cruz, Smith, Niuman Romero, Derrik Gibson, and Kyle Johnson.
Casey Delgado (W, 1-1) earned his first career Double-A victory for the Mets. He lasted six innings and allowed one unearned run on five hits, walking two and striking out two.
Portland scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning on a sacrifice fly by Nate Freiman to score Henry Ramos.
On Saturday, the Sea Dogs and Binghamton Mets split a Saturday doubleheader, with Portland taking game one 13-2 and Binghamton game two 7-3.
The Sea Dogs led wire to wire in game one. Ramos led off the bottom of the first inning with a solo homer off of Rainy Lara (L, 2-4) into the US Cellular Pavilion.
Later in the frame Rainel Rosario added an RBI single to extend the lead to 2-0. Then two batters later with the bases loaded, Ali Solis hit a three-run triple to blow things open and put Portland ahead 5-0.
The Sea Dogs sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning. Leading off the second, Ramos hit his second homer of the game to make it 6-0. Portland added two more on a homer by Ali Solis in the third off of David Roseboom, and scored four more times in the sixth to make it 13-1.
Solis finished with a career-high six RBIs, while Ramos notched the first multi-homer game for the Sea Dogs since Carlos Asuaje on May 25, 2015 vs. Reading.
Teddy Stankiewicz (W, 1-2) went the full seven innings to earn his first career Double-A win. Stankiewicz allowed two earned runs on six hits while walking one and striking out four. It was the second straight complete game worked by a Sea Dogs starter after Haley accomplished the feat yesterday.
Binghamton took game two behind a strong start from Tyler Pill (W, 3-3), who also worked a complete game. Pill allowed three earned runs on six hits in seven innings, walking two and striking out one.
The Mets struck for the early lead with a two-out RBI single by Dominic Smith off of Mitch Atkins (L, 0-1) in the top of the first. Smith later hit a two-run homer in the third off Atkins to stretch the lead to 3-0, and Kyle Johnson hit a solo shot off Nik Turley in the fifth to make it 4-0 Mets.
The Sea Dogs responded with an RBI single by Derek Miller and a two-run homer by Cole Sturgeon to cut the deficit to 4-3. But Binghamton added three more runs in the sixth and pulled away with the 7-3 win.
