Rangers’ Hamilton out for season
Texas Rangers outfielder Josh Hamilton will undergo left knee surgery next month that is expected to sideline him the rest of the season, the Rangers Radio Network reported Monday.
Hamilton made his decision after receiving a second opinion. The operation is scheduled for June 8.
Hamilton, 35, underwent two procedures on his knee in 2015 when he played in just 50 games.
He began a rehab assignment in April, but more problems with his knee arose. He’s already on the 60-day disabled list.
Hamilton, a five-time All-Star and the 2010 American League MVP, hit .253 with eight homers in his limited action for Texas last season after hitting .263 with 10 homers in 89 games for the Los Angeles Angels in 2014.
Hamilton’s five-year, $125 million contract expires after the 2017 season.
Royals lose Gordon to broken hand
Kansas City left fielder Alex Gordon will miss three to four weeks after breaking a bone in his hand after a collision with teammate Mike Moustakas in Sunday’s 3-2 loss to the Chicago White Sox.
The Royals placed Gordon on the disabled list and recalled infielder Cheslor Cutbert from Triple-A Omaha.
Even though Gordon got the worst of the collision, Moustakas also was banged up, but not as bad. He is listed as day-to-day with a contusion on the outside of his knee. He did not play Monday against the Twins.
Gordon has struggled this season — in 166 at-bats, he’s hitting .211 with only four home runs and 10 RBIS in 42 games.
NFL checking on Manziel crash
The NFL is looking for more information on Johnny Manziel’s involvement in a car wreck last month in West Hollywood, Calif. It is part of a larger investigation into the former Cleveland Browns quarterback’s off-field issues, TMZ reported.
Manziel told police in April that he was the passenger in the Mercedes-Benz S550 rental car that smashed into a light pole after a night of partying, per the TMZ report.
Manziel’s role in the crash remains unclear but neither Manziel nor the driver was arrested or charged with a crime.
Indians place Chamberlain on DL
The Cleveland Indians on Monday placed relief pitcher Joba Chamberlain on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to May 22.
Left-hander Ryan Merritt was recalled from Triple-A Columbus to take Chamberlain’s spot on the roster.
Also recalled from Columbus was right-hander Cody Anderson, who will make a spot start in Game 2 of Monday’s doubleheader against the Chicago White Sox. He is 0-3 with a 7.99 ERA in six starts this season.
Chamberlain has made 14 relief appearances this season and has a 1.93 ERA.
QB Fitzpatrick hopes to re-sign with Jets
Free agent quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick hopes to re-sign with the New York Jets even though the two sides have not been close in negotiations.
“I had a great time with the guys last year and I want to continue doing this. I’m still preparing for the season,” Fitzpatrick said Monday on SiriusXM NFL Radio. “It’s been a process and the good thing about it is the discussions have been behind closed doors.”
Fitzpatrick and the Jets reportedly remain far apart on reaching a deal. The Jets have offered Fitzpatrick between $7 million and $8 million per year and the veteran is thought to be seeking twice that amount.
“You would drive yourself crazy looking at other contracts around the league,” Fitzpatrick said.
Fitzpatrick had a career year last season, throwing for 3,905 yards with 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in his first year with the Jets. Fitzpatrick led the Jets to a 10-6 record — narrowly missing the playoffs — and set the franchise mark for touchdown passes.
