GRAY, Maine — Residents of an assisted-living facility in Gray returned to the facility after an early morning fire forced them to evacuate.
The fire at Gray Manor Senior Housing broke out around 4:30 a.m. Monday in a second floor bedroom, according to fire Capt. Galen Morrison.
The residents were evacuated and taken to a local American Legion hall while firefighters extinguished the blaze, which was out before 6 a.m.
Morrison said the quick thinking of a staff member helped keep the fire under control until crews arrived at the scene.
“Somebody from the staff used an extinguisher and was able to knock the fire down until we were able to get here, so they potentially saved the building,” the captain said.
