PORTLAND, Maine — Portland police are investigating the apparent drowning of Jonathan Knights, 42, of Portland.
Around 11:20 p.m. Wednesday, officers were called to the walking path along the Eastern Promenade for a report that someone fell in the water between 58 Fore St. and Cutter Street.
When officers arrived they could not locate the victim in the water. The Portland Fire Department’s Marine Unit and the U.S. Coast Guard were called to search for the victim, who was found near Portland Yacht Services around 12:15 a.m. Thursday by the Portland Fire Department.
Witnesses reported he had fallen 10 to 15 feet off of the rock sea wall and landed in the water.
The witnesses reported they had communicated with him while he was in the water and tried to get the him to make his way to a location where they could help him.
The witnesses reported they eventually lost sight of him and called 911.
The man’s body was brought to the medical examiner’s office for an examination.
The medical examiner has not yet released the cause of death.
