HOLDEN, Maine — Longtime Brewer city solicitor Joel A. Dearborn Sr. was charged Friday night with drunken driving, Holden Police Chief Chris Greeley said Tuesday.

Dearborn, 67, of Holden is scheduled to be arraigned July 14 at the Penobscot Judicial Center.

“I made a huge mistake and I have to deal with the consequences of it,” Dearborn said Tuesday.

The attorney has no prior criminal history, according to Greeley.

Efforts to reach Brewer City Manager Steve Bost on Tuesday to determine Dearborn’s status were unsuccessful.

The incident that led to the charge began about 7:40 p.m. Friday when Brewer police were asked to check on a man who appeared to be sleeping in a car in the parking lot of a Dirigo Drive business, Greeley said. When police arrived, the car was gone, he said. Because the report included a license plate number, information was passed on to Holden police, where the registered owner lives.

Holden police were called about 9:40 p.m. to the Bagaduce Road for a report of a car off the road, according to Greeley. When the officer arrived, he observed signs of intoxication and administered a field sobriety test, which Dearborn failed.

He was taken to the Bangor police station, where an Intoxilyzer test was administered, Greeley said.

The police chief declined to release the results but said that the test showed Dearborn’s blood alcohol level as above the legal limit of .08 percent.

Dearborn was not taken to the Penobscot County Jail but released on his own recognizance, Greeley said. The police chief did not know the circumstances of the attorney’s release.

If convicted, Dearborn faces 48 hours in jail, a mandatory minimum fine of $600 and a 90-day license suspension.
