BREWER, Maine — A health scare on Monday involving former Public Safety Director Perry Antone is why there was a quick change of command Wednesday, Antone said Thursday in a letter about his retirement.

“On Monday night I was taken to St. Joseph’s hospital and then was transferred to Eastern Maine Medical for further evaluation and overnight observation,” Antone’s June 9 letter states. “Facing the difficult decision, Tuesday morning I decided that I needed to go and speak to the City Manager and tender my resignation. This was very important for my family, the men and women at the Public Safety Department, and myself.

“As many know the past two years have been difficult for my family, those who have stood by in support, and myself,” he said. “Those years and issues have greatly contributed to a decline in my health and my ability to perform at the level that I believe the position of Public Safety Director demands and deserves.”

Deputy Chief Jason Moffitt was appointed as the city’s new public safety director and Capt. Chris Martin is now the deputy chief.

Antone’s resignation comes most exactly a decade after he was named Brewer police chief.

“It is now time for me to enjoy the next chapter in my life,” Antone said. “I hope this helps people to understand.”
