DAYTON, Maine — A Scarborough man is facing an eluding an officer charge after allegedly taking off from a state trooper on a motorcycle and later crashing it Wednesday night, police said.
Sgt. Jeremy Forbes had tried to stop Stephen Johnson, 48, for a traffic violation when Johnson took off at a high rate of speed, a state police statement said.
Forbes pursued the bike on Route 35 towards Hollis but lost sight of it, the statement said.
A short time later, police received a report from a resident that a man had knocked on their door needing rescue after being in a motorcycle accident, the statement said. The man, who turned out to be Johnson, hid the cycle in the resident’s garage.
Goodwin’s Mills rescue found Johnson at the Route 35 residence and found he was suffering from road rash and chest and shoulder injuries and was taken to a Biddeford hospital for treatment. He had crashed the motorcycle in a front yard after losing control on a turn.
State police summoned Johnson for eluding an officer, a Class C crime punishable by up to five years in prison. He was given an August 5 court date.
