Report: NHL committee recommends Las Vegas for expansion

After the NHL’s nine-member executive committee met for over four hours Tuesday in New York deliberating the expansion bids of Las Vegas and Quebec City, among other issues, it was reported by Las Vegas hockey blog the Sin Bin that the committee formally recommended Las Vegas for expansion for the 2017-18 season.

The official announcement will come on June 22 prior to the NHL Awards ceremony in Las Vegas, according to sinbin.vegas.

There was no information in the report whether Quebec City will also be awarded a franchise.

Velasquez leaves after two pitches

PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Vince Velasquez threw just two pitches before being removed from Wednesday afternoon’s start against the Chicago Cubs.

The team announced the right-hander left the game with “right biceps soreness.” No other information was given.

Velasquez, whose fastball is usually in the mid-to-upper-90s, threw two fastballs topping out at 87-mph.

Velasquez, 24, had Tommy John surgery in 2010 at the age of 18. He is 5-2 with a 3.65 ERA over 61 2/3 innings this season.

Miller, Broncos at contract impasse

Super Bowl MVP Von Miller and the Denver Broncos have yet to agree on a contract extension.

The team set a Tuesday night deadline to get a long-term deal done with the outside linebacker. Reports on Wednesday indicated that talks have not broken off, but the two sides are not close to coming to terms.

Without an agreement, Miller would be left to play the 2016 season under a $14.129 million franchise tag. As an exclusive rights free agent, he is not eligible to receive offers or negotiate with other teams.

According to reports, Miller and the Broncos agreed on years and total value of a new contract — six years for more than $114 million with $39.8 million guaranteed the first two years — but not on how the deal is broken down.
