NEWPORT, Maine — A local man wanted on multiple charges, including domestic violence assault, and four women were arrested at a local residence after an intensive search Wednesday morning, according to police.
Zachary McFarlin, 21, of Newport had been sought for nearly two months on outstanding arrest warrants that included charges of domestic violence assault, unlawful sexual contact, cruelty to animals, creating a false public alarm, violation of conditions of release and failure to appear in court, said Newport Police Chief Leonard Macdaid.
Operating on a tip, police got a search warrant for the home at 104 Hart St. and began searching it at 7 a.m. Wednesday.
Inside the home, officers from Newport Police Department, Maine State Police troopers and an investigator with the Penobscot County district attorney’s office were met with resistance from some of the women on the premises, Macdaid said. A state trooper was attacked and bitten by a dog for which he received medical treatment, Macdaid added.
Police located McFarlin hiding inside a cut-out area in a box spring covered by a mattress, Macdaid said. McFarlin resisted arrest, and it required four officers to subdue him, according to the police chief.
McFarlin was taken to Penobscot County Jail and is facing new charges of assaulting a police officer, failure to submit to arrest and violation of conditions of release.
Also taken into custody were McFarlin’s mother, Kelli McFarlin, 39, on charges of hindering apprehension and violation of conditions of release; Rylee Graves, 18, on a charge of violation of condition of release; a 16-year-old girl on a charge of assaulting a police officer; and a 14-year-old girl on a charge of failure to appear.
The girls’ names were not released because they are juveniles.
Kelli McFarlin was indicted in March on a charge of theft by unauthorized taking.
Macdaid thanked the state police and Penobscot County district attorney’s office’s investigator for assisting in the search and arrests, which took nearly two hours to complete.
