PORTLAND, Maine — The search for a missing Scarborough man officially became a “recovery effort.”
Portland police held a news conference Thursday, after a second day in the water turned up nothing. They spoke briefly about the search for Matthew Foster, saying it is now a recovery effort, but they still don’t know what happened.
Foster, 23, was reported missing on Monday, according to police.
Officials said he was last seen Friday evening at the Oasis bar on Wharf Street.
Foster was expected to meet his friends later in the night but never made it.
Crews searched for hours near Chandler’s Wharf from the morning into the afternoon Thursday.
The Maine Warden Service provided remote controlled underwater sonar equipment called ROV for the search.
There also were divers in the water, and K-9 units have scoured the area.
Police said boat traffic and visibility conditions slowed down the search on Thursday, but they are confident they’re searching the right area.
They were there all day Thursday and asked for privacy.
Officials said they will likely search until about 6 p.m. and plan to be back out Friday.
