BELFAST, Maine — A Waldo County woman suffered serious facial injuries and a broken leg in a crash late Thursday afternoon on Banks Road, Belfast police Sgt. Matthew Cook said Thursday night.

Melissa Goguen, 25, whose hometown was not immediately available, was driving a 2002 Silverado pickup on Banks Road about 4:30 p.m. when she began to approach a farm tractor driven by Dale Blood, 50, of 65 Banks Road, who had started crossing the road.

Blood saw the pickup truck heading his way and backed into his driveway, Cook said. The tractor was just off the roadway when it was struck by Goguen’s pickup, which swung the tractor around and then struck a large tree, the sergeant said.

Goguen initially was taken to Waldo County General Hospital but then was flown to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor, where she was undergoing surgery Thursday night, Cook said.

Blood, who suffered bumps and bruises, was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel, Cook said.

Cook said it was not yet clear why the pickup left the roadway but said that witnesses reported that she was looking down as she approached Blood’s property.

Goguen’s injuries are considered life-threatening, Cook said. To that end, the accident is being reconstructed and remains under investigation.
