BANGOR, Maine — With summer in full swing, Bangor police are warning the public about leaving dogs in hot vehicles.

In a post written on the department’s Facebook page, Sgt. Tim Cotton is encouraging the public to leave their dogs at home if they are going to be doing any shopping or other errands.

“It saves our ACO [animal control officer] from being called out constantly and you from being all embarrassed because you took too long digging in the three dollar movie bin at the big-box store,” the post read.

Should you need to bring your dogs with you in the car, the public is encouraged to roll windows down to the point at which the pets can stick their heads out the window and get fresh air.

“If a dog had thumbs, they would lock you in the car,” the post said.
