BENTON, Maine — Kennebec County sheriff’s deputies are warning the public of a scam after a theft complaint was fielded on Monday, according to Sheriff Ryan Reardon.
The victim was contacted by a person claiming to be a deputy stating the person had an arrest warrant for not paying their taxes, Reardon said.
The caller also said the victim should call a number needed to resolve the situation, and was subsequently told to go to the nearest Family Dollar or CVS Pharmacy to obtain iTunes gift cards in the sum of $1,000, Reardon said.
The victim was then ordered to call the suspect back with the numbers of the gift cards and provide them, which the victim did, Reardon said. The victim was then pressured into providing more money, which the victim could not do, as they stated they didn’t have the money.
“Unfortunately this is a scam that that has been attempted several times,” Reardon said.
Reardon is warning the public that police would never collect money in the form of iTunes gift cards or other ways.
