Two Sea Dogs selected to All-Star Futures Game
PORTLAND, Maine — Portland Sea Dogs’ second baseman Yoan Moncada and outfielder Andrew Benintendi have been selected to participate in the SiriusXM All-Star Futures Game on July 10 at Petco Park in San Diego.
Moncada, 21, was selected to join the World team and will be making his first Futures Game appearance. He was named a Carolina League mid-season All-Star this season with High-A Salem and a 2015 South Atlantic League postseason All-Star with Low-A Greenville.
Moncada was promoted from Salem to Portland on June 21 and is hitting .296 with a double, home run, and four RBIs in six games with the Sea Dogs. He has combined between Portland and Salem this season to hit .306 with 26 doubles, three triples, five home runs, 38 RBIs, and 36 stolen bases in 67 games.
Benintendi, 21, was selected to join the U.S. team and will be making his first ever All-Star appearance in professional baseball. He was named a MiLB.com Organization All-Star for Boston in 2015 and a Baseball America Short-Season All-Star for Lowell in 2015.
Benintendi was promoted from Salem to Portland on May 16 and is hitting .264 with three home runs and 22 RBI in 36 games at Double-A. Benintendi has combined between Portland and Salem to hit 302 with 23 doubles, eight triples, four home runs, 54 RBI, and 12 stolen bases.
Former Colts RB dies in accidental shooting
Former Indianapolis Colts running back Zurlon Tipton died Tuesday after accidentally shooting himself at a car dealership, according to police in Roseville, Michigan.
Tipton, 26, was shot in the abdomen when a gun discharged. He was transported to a hospital before dying from the injuries.
According to Roseville police chief James Berlin, Tipton took his Jeep in for service at a Chrysler Dodge Jeep RAM dealership. Tipton was placing personal belongings into a bag when one of two handguns inside the bag discharged.
“It is not clear at this time why the subject felt it necessary to be in possession of two handguns,” Berlin said in the statement.
Berlin said both guns in the bag were registered to Tipton, who had a concealed pistol license.
Tipton played in six games for the Colts in 2014 and 10 in 2015. He carried the ball 15 times for 38 yards and caught 11 passes for 125 yards and one touchdown.
Cavs’ Jefferson may play another season
Veteran Richard Jefferson announced he would retire following the Cleveland Cavaliers’ victory in Game 7 of the NBA Finals, but now wants to play multiple more seasons, according to Yahoo Sports.
With rumors swirling that the 36-year-old may join friend Luke Walton’s coaching staff with the Los Angeles Lakers, Jefferson now appears to be leaning toward returning as a player. He averaged 5.5 points and 17.9 minutes while starting five of 74 games last season.
Lightning re-sign two
Forward Tye McGinn and defenseman Matt Taormina signed one-year, two-way contracts to return to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
McGinn, 25, made his NHL debut on Nov. 1 and played in two games for the Lightning last season, recording one shot on goal. The Fergus, Ontario native scored 20 goals and 44 points in 72 games with the Syracuse Crunch. He tied for first on the Crunch with nine power-play goals.
Taormina, 29, played in three games for the Lightning last season, recording two shots on goal.
Notre Dame lineman hospitalized
Notre Dame Fighting Irish offensive lineman Parker Boudreaux continues to recover after being admitted to the hospital with an undisclosed medical condition Sunday, but is expected to make a full recovery.
Concern over Boudreaux’s health was raised when teammate Scott Daly tweeted that the freshman had a serious brain infection and asked for prayers. Daly later tweeted: “Apologize for alarming everyone “Didn’t have all the information. Parker is going to be OK. Excited for him to be back with us soon.”
Notre Dame spokesman Michael Bertsch later told the South Bend Tribune that Boudreaux “is in stable condition and resting comfortably.”
A three-star recruit, Boudreaux tweeted Sunday, “Not doing that well. Thank you for all the prayers .. I really do appreciate it.”
