BANGOR, Maine — An electrical malfunction is being blamed for a fire that heavily damaged a 15th Street home early Tuesday morning, officials said.

City firefighters were called to the scene around 2:30 a.m., according to Assistant Fire Chief Anthony Riitano.

The homeowners escaped from the burning structure by the time firefighters arrived, but Riitano said a couple of kittens did not make it out.

Riitano said the fire started on the first floor and quickly spread to the second, but crews from Bangor, Brewer and Orono were able to knock it down fast.

The state fire marshal’s office arrived later Tuesday to investigate and determined the fire was electrical in nature. No foul play is suspected.

The Red Cross Disaster Action Response Team is aiding the displaced homeowners.
