NOBLEBORO, Maine — A midcoast woman was rushed by helicopter to the hospital after authorities say her kayak was hit by a speedboat.
The collision happened around 7 Sunday night on Pemaquid Lake while the sun was still shining, making it hard to see out on the water. First responders say the people in the boat brought the victim and her kayak to a dock, where she received help.
According to the Maine Warden Service, a speed boat was towing a person on a wakeboard, and rounding a point, when it hit a kayak carrying a 61-year-old woman from Alna.
Wardens say she suffered a head injury, a broken bone and cuts, and had to be flown to Maine Medical Center by LifeFlight.
The Nobleboro Fire Department was one of the first on scene.
Chief Ryan Gallagher said the victim was conscious and talking as EMTs provided treatment.
He said Pemaquid Lake is a narrow lake full of boats, and the light at that time of day was a challenge.
“It would have been hard for anyone to see, even probably with polarized glasses it would have been hard, but it was a true accident that happened,” Gallagher said.
Wardens say the investigation is ongoing but at this point, no charges have been filed.
