BRUNSWICK, Maine — A 29-year-old Bath woman was arrested Wednesday night after police say she bit and kicked a Brunswick police officer during a traffic stop on Route 1.

Kristin R. Pierce was charged with two counts of felony assault on an officer as well as refusing to submit to arrest or detention, violating condition of release and possession of a usable amount of marijuana.

Brunswick officers stopped Pierce at 11:15 p.m. Wednesday on Route 1 northbound between Cook’s Corner and West Bath for alleged speeding and erratic operation, and because they suspected she might be intoxicated, Brunswick Police Cmdr. Marc Hagan said Thursday.

While one officer spoke to her, Pierce “became belligerent, screaming that they had no right to detain her,” Hagan said. When police asked her to get out of the car for a field sobriety test, she allegedly refused, rolled up her window and then rolled it down just enough to take her paperwork.

“At that point they tried to remove her from the vehicle,” Hagan said. “She bit Lt. [Lynne] Doucette on the hand — she didn’t break the skin — and she kicked Lt. Doucette in the leg. Then they got her hands behind her back and handcuffed, and she kicked Lt. Doucette again and attempted to spit on them.”

Pierce was taken to Cumberland County Jail on $1,000 cash bail. She is scheduled to appear in Portland Unified Criminal Court on Sept. 20.
