ORONO, Maine — Kara Washer, a forward from the Provincial Women’s Hockey League in Ontario, will play ice hockey for the University of Maine women’s team this fall, the school announced in a news release Friday.
Washer spent the last three years playing for the Barrie Sharks of the Provincial league in Ontario where she tallied 49 goals and 31 assists in 125 games.
UMaine assistant coach Sara Reichenbach said Washer will add strength, size and an offensive touch to the Black Bears lineup.
“She has a great shot and has tremendous confidence around the opposing net. Her presence on the ice will be felt in every game by using her size, shot, puck movement and her natural ability to put the puck in the net. She has continued to develop each year to make herself a complete player,” Reichenbach said in the release.
“We have always been impressed with Kara’s ability to make an offensive play out of a situation where it looks like nothing is going to happen,” she added. “Maine was always Kara’s first choice and a school she loved from the moment she learned about it. It has been a long wait to get Kara to campus, and I know she is excited and honored to represent Maine.”
Washer, a native of New Lowell, Ontario, scored 14 goals in her first season with the Sharks, 20 in the second season, and 15 in the third.
