FRENCHVILLE, Maine — An 87-year-old all-terrain vehicle driver was injured in a collision with a car on Route 1 in Frenchville Wednesday.
Gerard Dumais of Frenchville failed to yield to traffic as he attempted to cross U.S. Route 1 from a nearby ATV trail on his 2009 Yamaha ATV shortly before 5 p.m., according to a news release from Maine State Police.
Dumais crossed directly into the path of a westbound 2010 Ford Focus driven by Matthew Caron, 44, of Madawaska, who was unable to avoid hitting the ATV, according to investigating Trooper Matt Curtin. Speed was not considered a factor.
A crew with Ambulance Service Inc. brought Dumais to Northern Maine Medical Center in Fort Kent, where he received treatment for injuries not considered life-threatening, police reported. Caron was not injured in the crash.
The ATV and passenger car were extensively damaged.
Workers with the Maine Department of Transportation also assisted Curtin at the scene. The investigation is ongoing.
