Alabama offensive lineman Taylor arrested for DWI
Alabama offensive lineman Alphonse Taylor was arrested for driving while intoxicated Sunday, according to the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office.
Taylor’s bond was set at $1,000, according to multiple outlets.
The 6-foot-5, 345-pound senior from Mobile, Ala., started each of the Crimson Tide’s 15 games last season en route to the program’s 16th national championship. Alabama posted a thrilling 45-40 victory over Clemson in the College Football Playoff Championship on Jan. 11, 2016, in Glendale, Ariz.
Taylor led the team with 57 knockdown blocks last season. In the national title game against the Tigers, he had four knockdown blocks while paving the way for big performances for Alabama quarterback Jake Coker (335 yards passing) and Heisman Trophy-winning back Derrick Henry (158 rushing yards).
After last season, Taylor was asked by Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban to lose weight. He was demoted to second-team right guard during the spring after failing to lose enough weight, with Brandon Kennedy taking first-team reps according to 247Sports.com.
Taylor’s teammate, tackle Cam Robinson, was also arrested May 17 on misdemeanor charges of possessing a controlled substance, felony possession of a stolen gun and illegally carrying a weapon in the presence of narcotics. The charges were later dropped and Saban said Robinson wouldn’t be suspended.
Indians place Hunter on DL
The Cleveland Indians placed right-handed relief pitcher Tommy Hunter on the 15-day disabled list with a non-baseball related injury.
Hunter, 30, is beginning his second stint on the disabled list, retroactive to July 10, this season. He reportedly fell on some stairs while carrying his son during the All-Star break. Hunter has posted a record of 2-2 with a 3.74 ERA in 21 relief appearances over 21 2/3 innings.
The team also recalled right-hander Cody Anderson from Triple-A Columbus.
Anderson, 25, is beginning his fifth stint with Cleveland in 2016. He is 1-4 with a 7.48 ERA in nine games (eight starts over 43 1/3 innings. He also has posted a mark of 0-2 with a 4.32 ERA in six starts over 25 innings for Columbus.
Dodgers to evaluate Kershaw
The way Los Angeles Dodgers left-hander Clayton Kershaw (herniated disk) recovers from his 60-pitch simulated game Saturday will determine when he returns to the rotation, manager Dave Roberts said.
“Everything with Clayton is on the table, but after that last live (batting practice), just making sure his body feels 100 percent and ready to come back,” Roberts said.
Kershaw has been sidelined since June 25.
Lightning’s Killorn signs seven-year deal
The Tampa Bay Lightning and Alex Killorn avoided arbitration on Sunday after the forward signed a seven-year, $31.1 million deal.
Killorn also received a modified no-trade clause, according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times.
The 26-year-old Nova Scotia native was scheduled to have his arbitration hearing on Wednesday.
Killorn collected 14 goals, 26 assists and 44 penalty minutes in 81 games with the Lightning last season.
Warriors re-sign Varejao
The Golden State Warriors re-signed free-agent forward/center Anderson Varejao to a contract on Sunday.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed by the team, however, ESPN.com reported on Thursday that Varejao agreed to a one-year deal.
The 33-year-old Brazilian came to the Warriors in March after spending the first 11 years of his NBA career with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Between the Cavaliers and Warriors last season, Varejao averaged 2.6 points and 2.7 rebounds in 53 games. In the postseason, he played in 17 contests. with averages of 1.2 points and 1.2 rebounds.
The 6-foot-11 Varejao’s career averages are 7.4 points and 7.3 rebounds in 613 games.
