PORTLAND, Maine — A Sanford man was sentenced Monday to nearly 12 years in prison for conspiring to distribute heroin and fentanyl, a sentence lengthened because he possessed a gun at the time and then tried to get a co-defendant to lie about the charges.

Jesse Roy, 37, was sentenced in U.S. District Court for conspiracy to distribute heroin and fentanyl and possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking, according to a news release from U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II.

Roy was convicted of conspiring to distribute drugs in Sanford and elsewhere from about June 2014 to Oct. 20, 2014, according to the release.

On Oct. 20, 2014, agents executed a search warrant at his Sanford home and seized about 94 grams of heroin, $24,500 in cash and a .380-caliber handgun, according to the release.

Several months after his arrest, he sent two letters to a co-defendant instructing him to relate a “false narrative” about the charges.

Roy was sentenced to 80 months in prison for his role in the narcotics distribution conspiracy, with an additional 60 months for possession of a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking.

According to the release, Levy increased Roy’s sentence because he attempted to obstruct justice “and for acting as a manager or supervisor of the drug distribution conspiracy.”

The case was investigated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration and the Sanford Police Department.
