Oklahoma State forward dies following workout

Oklahoma State basketball junior college transfer Tyrek Coger died after he collapsed following a team workout Thursday afternoon.

Coger, 21, was transported to Stillwater Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:23 p.m.

“Tyrek was excited to be at Oklahoma State and had such passion for the game and was looking forward to being an OSU Cowboy,” Oklahoma State coach Brad Underwood said in a statement. “Losing a member of the team is like losing a member of the family. But we know our loss pales in comparison to the pain his family is going through.”

Underwood was recruiting in Las Vegas when he heard the news.

Coger arrived on campus July 5. He was a graduate of Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh, N.C. The 6-foot-9 forward played the 2013-14 season at East Florida State, sat out the 2014-15 academic year and resumed his studies at Cape Fear Community College in Wilmington, N.C., last year.

Sabres’ Kane charged with harassment for bar incident

Buffalo Sabres forward Evander Kane surrendered to police on Friday and was charged with criminal trespass and harassment in connection with a June incident at a Buffalo bar.

Kane, 24, was charged with four counts on non-criminal harassment and one count of misdemeanor trespass in relation to the June 24 incident at Bottoms Up.

Police said two women accused Kane of trying to push them into his car during two separate incidents around 3 a.m.

Kane allegedly put his hands on three women and a male bouncer at the club. He grabbed the throat of one woman while trying to push her into his car.

This is the second time Kane has been under investigation for an incident involving women. In December, he was accused of sexual assault and prosecutors decided in March that there wasn’t enough evidence to proceed.

Husson tennis team receives academic honors

TEMPLE, Arizona — The Husson University women’s tennis team earned Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-Academic Team honors, and had nine student-athletes named Scholar-Athletes announced by the organization on Thursday.

Husson is one of 148 institutions throughout the country to receive this honor, and the only North Atlantic Conference school represented. The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or above, and all varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year.

The Eagles had nine Scholar-Athlete honorees. In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status, the player must be a varsity letter winner, have a GPA of at least 3.50 for the current academic year, and have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters. Senior Sarah Smith, junior Katie Pratt, sophomores Samantha Dubay, Alaina Dyer, Emma Fontaine, Kelsey Pelletier and Elizabeth Adley, and freshman Charlotte Bednarz and Meridith Blessard each earned the honors.

Warriors’ Green reaches plea agreement

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green reached a plea agreement to avoid jail time in the case in which he was charged for slapping a Michigan State football player.

Officials in East Lansing, Mich., announced the agreement on Friday. Green will be fined $500 and pay $60 in restitution to Jermaine Edmondson, who police said was slapped by Green on July 10.

Green didn’t have to admit guilt or enter a no-contest plea, according to assistant city prosecutor David Meyers.

Green, a former Michigan State basketball star, originally was facing a misdemeanor assault charge. It was reduced to a noise violation, which is an infraction.

Edmondson is no longer part of Michigan State’s football program. School officials previously said his departure was not related to the incident with Green.
