BANGOR, Maine — A Brewer man who allegedly led police on a short foot chase Tuesday night made his first court appearance Wednesday on charges of burglary, assault on an officer and refusing to submit to arrest.
Bail for Brock Cochran, 37, was set at $10,000 cash at the Penobscot Judicial Center.
He remained Wednesday at the Penobscot County Jail unable to post bail.
A resident of a Brimmer Street apartment told Brewer police that he found a man in his apartment about shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday and made him leave.
Cochran, who matched the description the resident gave police, was located a short time later near the Penobscot Bridge, according to court documents. When officers approached him on the bridge, Cochran allegedly started to run and headed into traffic.
Officer Dan Costain grabbed Cochran’s shirt, but it ripped off him as he kept running, the affidavits filed at the courthouse said. Sgt. Paul Gauvin grabbed Cochran by the shoulder and upper arm. Cochran allegedly flailed his arms, hitting the officer in the head and continued running toward Bangor.
Officer Michael Cummings drove his patrol car across the bridge into Bangor and pursued Cochran on foot, according to court documents. He caught up with Cochran and took him into custody with Gauvin’s assistance in the parking lot of Varney Insurance on Oak Street.
Cochran has a long criminal history and was charged on Monday by Bangor police with theft by unauthorized taking and burglary to a motor vehicle, court documents said.
He is next due in court on October 5.
If convicted, Cochran faces up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.
