BANGOR, Maine — Officials have determined a March fire that gutted a Hammond Street business was intentionally set.
The fire, which destroyed the Allied/Rice Glass building, has been determined as arson, Sgt. Scott Richardson of the state fire marshal’s office said Thursday afternoon.
Richardson said nobody has been charged yet, and the case remains under investigation.
A quick stop by city firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to a nearby building.
A witness in a nearby Webster Avenue residence heard a series of popping sounds just prior to calling 911.
The fire forced Bangor officials to shut down Hammond Street for several hours and drew firefighters from several surrounding communities. A nearby apartment that shares the building with Rice/Allied Glass was empty at the time of the fire but suffered smoke and water damage.
