CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine — Falmouth Country Club’s Shawn Warren shot a 2-over-par 74 for a one-stroke lead in the first day of the State of Maine Championship Tuesday at the Sugarloaf Golf Club.
Hampden native John Hickson of Bob’s Sporting Goods, the 2014 State of Maine golf champ, was just one shot back in second place, while defending champion Bob Darling of Fox Ridge Golf Club in Auburn stood tied for 12th at 10-over.
Amateur Timothy Desmarais of the Purpoodock Club in Cape Elizabeth carded the low-amateur round with 6-over-par 78, which left him in sole possession of third place, while Jeff Seavey of the Samoset Golf Course in Rockport was a stroke back in fourth.
Despite ideal weather conditions, the Sugarloaf Golf Club maintained its reputation as one of Maine’s toughest courses as golfers battled fast greens and challenging pin placements. Sugarloaf has hosted this event for the last 13 years, and more than 20 times since the course was constructed in 1985.
The final round of the tournament begins Wednesday morning.
The State of Maine Championship is an annual 36-hole medal play tournament, which matches Maine’s top professional and amateur golfers in junior, senior and ages 18-50 categories. To compete in the tournament, professionals must be a member of the Maine Chapter of the New England PGA, while all Maine residents are eligible to compete in the amateur category.
