AUGUSTA, Maine — With hot weather expected to move into the state Thursday, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection has issued an air quality alert.
Ground-level ozone concentrations are expected to reach unhealthy levels from Kittery to Acadia National Park, according to a statement released Wednesday.
Temperatures throughout the state were expected to hover around 90 degrees Thursday.
As ozone levels rise, children and healthy adults who exert themselves and individuals suffering from respiratory diseases can experience reduced lung function and irritation.
Symptoms include a shortness of breath, coughing, throat irritation and an uncomfortable sensation in their chest.
Those who work outside should be cautious and stay in an air conditioned places if possible, lay low and consume plenty of fluids.
