MANCHESTER, Maine — A Belgrade man suffered serious injuries Tuesday when his motorcycle collided with a pickup truck on Route 135, according to officials.

Lee Richardson, 71, apparently had no time to avoid the truck driven by Justin Sawyer, 28, of Belgrade, Kennebec County Sheriff Ryan Reardon said.

The crash occurred when Sawyer was attempting to pull into traffic and did not see Richardson coming until it was too late, Reardon said.

Richardson struck the pickup on the front bumper, causing him to be thrown from his bike, Reardon said.

A passer-by at the scene and police were able to render tourniquets, which Reardon said saved Richardson’s life as he had a significant leg injury that was deemed life-threatening.

The sheriff said Richardson is an experienced motorcyclist and was wearing a helmet. He was flown to Central Maine Medical Center via LifeFlight for treatment of his leg injuries. Sawyer was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation, and Reardon believes driver inattention on Sawyer’s part was a factor in the crash. Reardon also is warning the public to be wary of motorcycles over the remainder of the summer.
