ELLSWORTH, Maine — A local transient was arrested Tuesday after allegedly setting a fire in front of Mike’s Country Store, officials said.

Patrick Nevells, 46, is accused of arson after allegedly lighting a trash can in front of the store on fire Tuesday, according to a statement from the state fire marshal’s office.

A passing motorist reported witnessing Nevells set the blaze and subsequently walk off Tuesday afternoon, the statement said.

The witness reported the fire to the store owner, who moved the trash can away from the Water Street building and contained the fire with a fire extinguisher.

Nevells was arrested upon returning to the scene of the crime three hours later, when employees recognized him.

Nevells is being held at the Hancock County Jail.
