ROCKLAND, Maine — An independent journalist has entered the race for one of two seats on the Rockland City Council.
Judith Lawson of Holmes Street took out nomination papers Wednesday, joining former harbor master Ed Glaser, who also took out papers this week.
Lawson tried to run last year, but when she filed her nomination papers on the deadline day, she was 12 short of the minimum 100 signatures of registered Rockland voters needed to get on the ballot.
Lawson wrote a critical article earlier this month for the website The Bollard in which she contended that “dirty politics and dirty energy” nearly tarnished Rockland. The article concerned the efforts of a developer to build a natural-gas fired power plant in the city. The developer backed off after the City Council enacted a moratorium and then adopted regulations on any new energy plant.
The seats held by Mayor Louise MacLellan-Ruf and Councilor Larry Pritchett are up for election this year. Both said last week that they had not decided yet whether to seek re-election.
Candidates have until Sept. 26 to collect the 100 valid signatures needed to get on the Nov. 8 ballot.
