SANFORD, Maine — Police are investigating a crash involving an all-terrain vehicle early Monday morning.
The crash occurred shortly after 2 a.m., according to a statement released by Sanford police.
An officer had observed two ATVs traveling on Main Street and tried to conduct a traffic stop, but both machines refused to stop and turned into the Mid-Town Mall parking area at reckless speeds, police said.
The lead ATV, driven by a 19-year-old man whose name was not released, struck curbing in the parking lot and hit a post on the sidewalk near Family Dollar, police said.
The driver suffered a head injury and was taken to Southern Maine Health Care’s Sanford campus for treatment before being taken by LifeFlight to Maine Medical Center.
The driver was not wearing a helmet. The crash remains under investigation.
