FREEPORT, Maine — Police continue to investigate a Friday morning robbery during which knives, watches and a wallet worth thousands of dollars were stolen from Intervale Mercantile Co. on School Street.
At about 8:40 a.m. Friday, before the store had opened, a man entered the store, approached the owner from behind and placed the owner’s wallet and the other merchandise in a leather satchel before fleeing the store, Freeport Police Chief Susan Nourse said Monday.
Intervale Mercantile sells high-end sunglasses and leather goods, among other items.
The owner did not see the man, and no weapon or note was shown, according to Nourse, although, “he felt something” against his back.
Citing an ongoing investigation, Nourse declined to release any other details except to say employees of nearby stores don’t need to be concerned.
“This seemed like it was very directed,” she said.
