TRENTON, Maine — Two women have died in a crash on Route 3 that involved a commercial truck, according to police.

Chief Deputy Patrick Kane indicated Tuesday in a prepared statement that Mary Massucco, 75, of Mount Desert, and Dawn Meardy, 45, of Bar Harbor, died at the scene.

The women’s 2008 Pontiac Torrent Massucco collided with the truck around 8:40 a.m. near Ellsworth Chainsaw.

The Pontiac was headed south when it crossed the centerline of the highway, according to Kane. The sport-utility vehicle collided head-on with a Lane Construction flatbed truck driven by Adam Keeler, 21, of Trenton.

Kane said Keeler was taken by ambulance to Maine Coast Memorial Hospital in Ellsworth. Information about the truck driver’s condition was not available Tuesday afternoon.

The commercial vehicle unit of Maine State Police is assisting the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department in the investigation because of the involvement of the commercial truck.

Route 3 was shut down for several hours near the crash scene, with traffic between Ellsworth and Mount Desert Island being rerouted onto Route 230, also known as Bayside Road, and through Lamoine on Route 204.

The fatal accident follows several in Maine that occurred over the Labor Day holiday weekend.

Two men died Saturday in Prospect and a third was critically injured when a pickup truck they were riding in crashed on North Searsport Road. Also on Saturday, a man died and his wife was injured when their Jeep was struck by a pickup truck in Corinna.

On Sunday, an Orono man died when his motorcycle crashed as he was driving down from the summit of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the crash. The Trenton Volunteer Fire Department, Maine State Police, Maine Department of Transportation, Hancock County Emergency Management Agency and Lamoine Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.

The accident is being reconstructed by Hancock County Deputy Sheriff Jeff McFarland along with Deputy Dana Austin, Lt. Christopher Thornton, Kane and Sheriff Scott Kane.
