HAMPDEN, Maine — Dollar General announced Thursday that construction is underway on a new store on Main Road North, next to Pat’s Pizza.

Located at 674 Main Road North, the new store is slated to open in the winter of 2017, a company official said in a news release.

Dan Nieser, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development, said the company’s priority when choosing store locations is convenience, as its stores generally serve customers within a 3- to 5-mile radius, or 10-minute drive.

“This new location is a great fit for Dollar General,” he said, adding that the company also takes demographics, competitive analyses and traffic patterns into consideration when determining new store locations.

The Hampden store, which will be roughly 9,000 square feet, will employ about six to 10 employees, depending on its needs.

Dollar General, headquartered in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, has more than 131,500 stores and 119,000 employees nationwide. Its stores offer a selection of items including food, cleaning supplies, apparel, paper products, health and beauty items, pet needs, home decor and toys.

Dollar General is involved in the communities it serves and is an ardent supporter of literacy and education through the Dollar General Literacy Foundation, which awards grants each year to nonprofit organizations, schools and libraries within a 20-mile radius of a Dollar General store or distribution center to support adult, family, summer and youth literacy programs.
