BRUNSWICK, Maine — Police are investigating a Friday night fire that damaged a vacant Bowdoin Street home that was recently purchased and is being renovated by a contractor.

Firefighters went to 12 Bowdoin St. just before 9 p.m. and found the back of the two-story, Cape Cod-style home on fire, with flames starting to creep up to the attic, Brunswick Fire Chief Ken Brillant said Saturday.

“The first-in truck got a line on the back of the building, put that section out and made entry,” he said. “They were able to open up the ceiling in the back bedroom and extinguish the fire in the attic. It was all under control in about 15 minutes.”

Damage was confined to the cedar shake siding on the back of the house and minor damage to the attic, Brillant said, who said he didn’t know if the structure was insured.

The home recently was purchased by Tamara Wood, according to Brunswick police Cmdr. Mark Waltz.

“The investigation is all about the cause and the origin. We have a pretty good idea that it started near the rear of the building, but now we just have to figure out what caused it,” Brunswick Fire Chief Ken Brillant told WGME.

Freeport and Topsham firefighters assisted at the scene.

No injuries were reported.
