BREWER, Maine — Recent renovations at Brewer High School had forced administrators to put all of the school’s sports championship plaques into storage.

Once the renovations to the school’s main lobby, front office, cafeteria and gymnasium wrapped up in 2014, athletic administrator Dave Utterback and staff began the process of getting the plaques back on display for all to see.

Numerous championship plaques, which Utterback said date back as far as the 1950s and 1960s, are hung proudly in the lobby that leads from the school’s entrance down a hallway toward the school library on what is known as a “Wall of Champions.”

“That wall presented itself as a space this summer,” Utterback said.

The renovations to the school started in 2013 and were completed within a year.

Utterback added the school also is in the progress of replacing championship banners inside the gymnasium and getting some of the sportsmanship banners hung back up.

The plaques on the wall were hung by longtime Brewer coach and administrator Dennis Kiah and 1981 Brewer graduate and former athletics standout Phil Pushard.

“There’s some history on that wall,” Utterback said.

Utterback said that the plaques were not hung immediately after the renovations concluded because the walls needed to be painted.

The school’s trophy cases, which includes the hardware from the 1970 state championship and nationally-ranked football team coached by Ken Perrone, remain outside Brewer’s gym next to the athletic hall of fame.

Utterback said one of the trophy cases contains hardware from the school’s longtime success in cross-country and outdoor track and field, which includes numerous state, conference and regional championships.

BDN sports freelancer Ryan McLaughlin grew up in Brewer and is a lifelong fan of the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics and Boston Bruins.
