BATH, Maine — Bath Iron Works announced Friday that it will lay off 19 electricians on Oct. 28 if other positions in the company cannot be found for them.
The announcement follows by one week news that the company would lay off 12 machinists, BIW spokesman Matt Wickenheiser confirmed Friday morning.
On Sept. 23, the company announced that 30 employees would be laid off as part of a larger elimination of 160 positions,
As in September, Wickenheiser said the layoffs are because of the usual cycle of work in the shipyard and are unrelated to the company’s failure to secure a $2.4 billion contract to build offshore patrol cutters for the U.S. Coast Guard.
He said officials will attempt to find other jobs for the 19 affected employees before the end of the month.
Bath Iron Works employs approximately 6,000 people.
