WEST GARDINER, Maine — Two teens got an important reminder about why they need to buckle up before hitting the road after seat belts saved their lives in a rollover this weekend.
On Saturday, a sedan crossed the centerline on High Street in West Gardiner and struck an SUV in which two teens were traveling, according to a statement on the Facebook page for the Maine State Police. The driver of the sedan reportedly was falling asleep at the wheel at the time of the crash, and the driver of the SUV was not able to steer out of the vehicle’s path.
The collision caused the SUV to roll over as it left the road. Both teens were wearing their seat belts, preventing them from being ejected from the vehicle, according to the state police. They suffered only minor injuries as a result.
The statement did not name the occupants of the SUV or the sedan, but police issued the driver of the sedan a summons for failing to maintain control of a motor vehicle.
