BREWER, Maine — A Bangor man was arrested last week after he threatened to harm a 60-year-old woman’s cat, Brewer Deputy Police Chief Chris Martin said Wednesday.

Zachary Ladd, 25, whom police described as a transient, is charged with theft by extortion and violating the conditions of his release from a prior arrest.

Martin said that an investigation by Brewer police Officer Joshua Gunn indicated that Ladd threatened to harm the woman’s cat if she didn’t withdraw money from her bank account and give it to him on Oct. 18.

Ladd allegedly accompanied the woman to a Brewer bank to make the withdrawal.

However, the woman was able to communicate to bank employees that she needed help and they called the police, Martin said.
