PHIPPSBURG, Maine — A man who accidentally shot himself while hunting Wednesday afternoon was listed in fair condition at Maine Medical Center as of Thursday morning.
Thomas Gilliam, 48, stepped out of his truck to look at deer tracks near the intersection of Small Point and Popham roads just before 4:30 p.m. and dropped his Winchester model 94 .32 special, Maine Game Warden Doug Kulis said.
The rifle hit the pavement and discharged, sending a bullet through his arm and wrist, according to Kulis.
A passer-by stopped and gave Gilliam a shirt to wrap his arm, Kulis said, but left the scene shortly after a Phippsburg ambulance arrived.
Phippsburg EMS took Gilliam to Maine Medical Center.
Kulis said the shooting does not appear to be suspicious.
