NORRIDGEWOCK, Maine — The Somerset County Sheriff’s Office said Saturday that speed and alcohol were factors in a rollover crash Friday night in which a Skowhegan man suffered serious injuries.

Nicolas Poirier, 33, was flown to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston after firefighters extricated him from his wrecked 2009 Chevrolet Impala, Cpl. Ritchie Putnam said Saturday. Information about his medical condition was not immediately available late Saturday morning.

Poirier was traveling north on Route 8, also known as Mechanic Street, at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his car on a curve, Putnam said. The car then rolled several times before striking a large tree.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation, but speed and alcohol appear to have been factors, Putnam said.

Members of the Norridgewock Fire Department, Skowhegan Fire Department, Smithfield Fire Department, Redington EMS, Lifeflight of Maine, Central Maine Power and Chuck’s Towing assisted at the scene of the crash.
