BANGOR, Maine — A Madison man pleaded guilty Friday to conspiring to defraud the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.
David B. Watson Sr., 66, conspired with his daughter-in-law to illegally obtain for her VA compensation benefits, according to a statement released Friday by the U.S. attorney’s office.
Watson submitted documents to the VA on her behalf, falsely claiming she had suffered from mental disabilities that were connected to her service in the U.S. Army and told her how to falsely describe her mental condition to VA doctors, according to the release.
The release does not name the daughter-in-law or indicate whether she has been charged.
A call to Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Moore, who handled the case, was not returned Friday.
Watson faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. He will be sentenced after the U.S. Probation Office completes a presentence investigation report, the release states.
