CASTINE, Maine — A 56-year-old Orland man riding as a passenger in a GMC sport utility vehicle died early Saturday evening after being ejected from the SUV when it rolled over on Castine Road, the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday.
Ronald Bakeman, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the crash site, according to Deputy Franklin Jennings. The crash happened shortly after 6:35 p.m., when Francis Spinazola, 54, of Castine, who was driving north, failed to negotiate a sweeping curve in the road, crossed the centerline into the oncoming lane, and traveled along the road’s shoulder for about 300 feet before striking rocks.
The impact caused the Envoy to roll over several times, ejecting Bakeman and another passenger, Cheryl Spinazola, 57, of Castine, who also was not wearing a seat belt.
Information on any injuries she may have suffered was not immediately available Sunday evening.
Jennings said the crash remains under investigation. He is being assisted by Chief Deputy Patrick Kane and Deputy Jeff McFarland.
