BANGOR, Maine — Two people died in crashes on slick roads Monday as a storm that began in southern Maine late Sunday dropped between 6 and 10 inches of snow across the state as it traveled north.

The first fatality occurred early Monday morning in New Portland, when 21-year-old Connor Graham of Hampden failed to negotiate a curve on snow-covered Bog Road and hit some trees, according to the Somerset County Sheriff’s Office.

In Gorham, 45-year-old Joseph Piawlock was killed and four others injured when the SUV they were in lost control, went into the oncoming lane and collided with a dump truck, Portland television station WGME, CBS 13, reported.

Schools, businesses and municipal offices across the state closed or altered hours of operations because of the storm, which by early evening Monday had moved out of southern Maine and was beginning to taper off in eastern and central Maine.

In addition, state offices opened later and closed early.

The storm was expected to continue moving north and out of the state by late Monday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Parkman, Abbott and Dover-Foxcroft in Piscataquis County saw 6 to 8 inches of snow, the weather service said. Bangor and Brewer received at last 4 inches.

Columbia Falls in Washington County received at least 6 inches by early Monday afternoon.

To the south, more than 8 inches of snow fell in Kingfield in Franklin County. Several cities and towns in that part of the state saw upwards of 6 inches, including Lewiston, Turner, Lisbon Falls, Auburn, Brunswick, Freeport, Bridgton, Hope and Lovell.
