PORTLAND, Maine — A 26-year-old Cumberland County Jail inmate died at the hospital a week after he hanged himself in his cell, according to a jail official.

Dante Majeroni of Standish had been in critical condition at Maine Medical Center after strangling himself with his bed sheets, Capt. Steve Butts of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. Portland rescue workers took Majeroni to the hospital after he was found unconscious in his cell last Tuesday night, according to Butts.

Majeroni was arrested Feb. 15 and charged with aggravated assault domestic violence. He was not on suicide watch when the incident occurred but was being held in “disciplinary segregation” after contacting the alleged victim, according to the sheriff’s office.

Majeroni had also made an earlier attempt on his life, officials told WGME.

The sheriff’s Criminal Investigations Division and the Portland Police Department launched investigations into the incident last week. Butts said the Maine Department of Corrections was informed of the death.
