YORK, Maine – The quick-moving storm that tore through southern Maine Thursday evening caused several nearly simultaneous incidents in York.
Fire personnel and police responded to Long Sands Road in York Village where a limb sheared off a tree in the front yard of the Anne Erwin Real Estate building and brought down a power line to the building.
The line was lying on the roadway, causing traffic to be rerouted down York Street until Central Maine Power crews could arrive.
As personnel were dealing with that situation, a call came in about two sailboats in distress at the mouth of York Harbor.
The two 10-foot boats belonged to the Agamenticus Yacht Club, said York Village Fire Chief Chris Balentine. Youth were taking sailing lessons when they were caught in the squall and tried to make it into the harbor.
According to Balentine, a club motor boat quickly responded and got the youngsters to safety. Instructors remained, to right the sailboats and bring them in. The harbor master and the fire department’s water rescue boat responded, but the situation was in hand, he said.
